Penpot keeps pushing an open-source, self-hostable alternative to Figma, with native W3C design token support. Figma still leads on plugins and prototyping polish, so this is a growing niche play, not a takeover.
Recent write-ups comparing Penpot and Figma for 2025 point to the same pattern: Penpot's open-source model, self-hosting option, and standards-first approach (CSS/SVG/HTML export, W3C-aligned tokens) appeal to teams wary of vendor lock-in. Figma still wins on plugin ecosystem, FigJam-style whiteboarding, and mature multi-user performance at scale.
If you already use both, as your stack does, this is a good moment to stress-test Penpot on a real (not toy) file — component libraries, variants, handoff — rather than take marketing claims at face value. Calling Penpot 'the future of design tools' outright is more hype than adoption right now; the honest read is that it's a credible, improving alternative for specific team needs, especially open-source-minded or budget-conscious orgs.
