MIT Sloan research argues AI's biggest gains come from restructuring entire workflows, not swapping in single AI tools. For junior designers, that means workflow fluency matters more than mastering any one AI plugin.

A new MIT Sloan paper, *Chaining Tasks, Redefining Work: A Theory of AI Automation*, argues AI's real disruption isn't task-by-task automation — it's how tasks get sequenced, grouped and handed off between humans and machines. Companies chasing quick AI wins often see slower returns than expected, because workflows need re-designing around the tool, not bolted onto old processes. For a junior designer, this is useful context: don't panic-collect AI plugins. Instead, get fluent in mapping a workflow end-to-end — brief, ideation, handoff, QA — and ask where AI genuinely removes a bottleneck versus where it just moves the bottleneck somewhere else. This is adoption-stage thinking, not hype: it's about organisational change, which moves slowly and unevenly across teams.

Pick one workflow you touch weekly (e.g. handoff to dev) and map every step on paper — then flag the one step where AI could remove real friction, not just add a shiny feature.
