Penpot's open-source pitch is maturing, not just noise

Penpot keeps getting pitched as the open-source Figma alternative — built on SVG/CSS, self-hostable, no vendor lock-in. It's real and improving, but it's adoption-stage, not a mass switch yet.

The open-source case for Penpot is genuinely different from Figma's: you can inspect the code, self-host it, and you're not tied to one company's pricing decisions. That matters more to design leads worrying about enterprise lock-in than to most junior designers day-to-day. Performance and plugin ecosystem still lag Figma for now, so don't expect a like-for-like swap. Calling this hype would be lazy — it's a slower, steadier adoption story worth knowing about, especially if a future employer runs an open-source stack or cares about data sovereignty.
