Penpot's own comparison page lays out where it beats Figma (unlimited free seats, self-hosting, no vendor lock-in) and where it still lags (plugin ecosystem, FigJam-style whiteboarding). Worth knowing since you're already running both.
Penpot's official Figma comparison is refreshingly honest: it admits Figma still leads on plugin maturity and advanced prototyping, but argues Penpot wins on openness — unlimited designer/developer seats on the free plan, self-hosting via Docker, and files expressed as open code rather than a proprietary format.
For a junior with both tools in the stack, this matters less as a "which wins" question and more as a chance to see how design-to-dev handoff differs when the tool exports real CSS/SVG/HTML instead of a spec doc.
This is adoption, not hype: Penpot is a real, growing open-source project with actual teams using it, but it hasn't displaced Figma's ecosystem yet.
