Figma vs Penpot 2026: who actually wins?

A June 2026 comparison shows Figma still dominates raw market share, but Penpot is closing in on cost, ownership and dev handoff.

Figma remains the default - the same comparison piece cites the UX Tools 2024 survey putting it at 82.3% of designers' primary tool, roughly 46x Sketch, with Adobe XD basically dead after Adobe canned it. But by June 2026, reviewers are treating Penpot as a serious second option, not a novelty: it's browser-based, open-source, and free at the team level in ways Figma isn't. The trade-off is real - Figma still wins on plugin depth and raw performance at scale, Penpot wins on ownership and cost. If you're already using both (a lot of juniors are), you're not behind - you're hedging sensibly.

List the 3 Figma plugins you rely on most, then check if Penpot has an equivalent or workaround - that's your actual switching cost, not vibes.
